Tennessee Commissioner of Indian Affairs Speaks to Rotary Club

by Bob Augustin Jr.

David Teat, Tennessee Commissioner of Indian Affairs, was the guest speaker of the Lawrenceburg Rotary Club at their November 2, 2007 meeting.   In his introduction of Commissioner Teat, Rotarian Ardeen Walters reminded the club that November 6 was the anniversary of the Trail of Tears, passing through Lawrenceburg.  The Trail of Tears took place in 1838 when the Cherokee nation was forcibly removed from its home land in Georgia and relocated in the Oklahoma Territory.

Commissioner Teat also spoke on the Cherokee Trail of Tears but the primary focus of his speech was to educate the Club on the function and existence of the Tennessee Commission of Indian Affairs.  Commissioner Teat pointed out that the Commission had been abolished but subsequently had been reinstated.
