Rotary Four Way Test Speech Winner Selected

by Bob Augustin Jr.

4 Way Speech Contest Winner

The Lawrenceburg Rotary Club held its annual Four Way Test Speech Contest for high school students at its Good Friday, March 21, 2008 meeting.  Students from each of the county's high schools are invited to present a four to six minute speech on the Rotary's  Four Way Test.

Heather Murphy, a student at LCHS, was selected the local winner by the club.  Sasha Guthrie, also a student at LCHS, was the first runner up.

The Four Way Test, written by Rotarian Herb Taylor in 1932 for his own business, is the standard by which Rotarians gauge the things we think, say and do.  It was written as a standard for business ethics, but it also can be used as a guide for personal ethics.  To determine if a situation is truly ethical, one must answer these four questions affirmatively:

       1.  Is it the truth?

       2.  Is it fair to all concerned?

       3.  Will it build good will and better friendships?

       4.  Will it be benefical to all concerned?

As the Lawrenceburg Rotary Club winner,  Heather Murphy will compete in the Rotary District Speech Contest April 12 in Columbia.

Pictured above are Lawrenceburg Rotary Club President Bill Phillips, Sasha Guthrie, First Runner-up, Heather Murphy, Four Way Speech Contest winner, and Stuart Chandler, Four Way Test Chairman.
