Doug Edwards, General Manager of MGH Wholesale Grocers, described the Wounded Warrior Project, a program established by Veterans and concerned individuals to help support wounded and disabled soldiers recovering from their injuries. More than 16,000 US military personnel have been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of these injuries involve serious disabilities including amputations. The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is to "raise public awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members to aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs".
This project addresses disabled soldiers' needs not covered by military or other government programs, such as providing travel expenses for family members to be with the injured soldier during recovery, modifying vehicles to accommodate permanent disabilities, remodeling homes to accommodate wheelchairs, building a Trauma Unit to help with rehabilitation and related support activities.
The Wounded Warrior Project organization will be sponsoring a one-time fund-raising event at the Titans training facility in Nashville on Friday, May 12, 2006. This event will include a dinner with entertainment provided by country music stars and attendance by numerous celebrities and politicians.
